SEDA aims to contribute to better educational outcomes for children and young people.

PUBLISHING A BOOK FOR CHILDREN IN LAOS

Schools in Laos are badly equipped, and most do not have enough books for children to learn to read. The books that the children do see are rarely fun or interesting for them, and if they are bilingual, the English is often very bad. SEDA is raising money so that 10,000 children in disadvantaged areas in Attappeu, Salavanh and Sekong Provinces schools will receive a copy of a new, fun and educational children’s book called “Look Around Laos”. The book will encourage reading and literacy in a country where almost a quarter of the population cannot read.

The book is available online http://www.unbelievablelaos.com/media/lookaroundlaos/index.html.

This project is a partnership with Williams and Kennett Company from the U.K, who have designed and created a children’s book for 9-15 year olds. Thomas William came to Laos and took pictures for the book.

Currently the translation to Lao language and revision has been completed and books are going to be printed. We don’t have yet enough budgets to get all 10,000 copies to children ($2.50 per book, 25000 in total). We have received from private funds and through global giving 5500 dollars (for 2200 copies) and we are hoping to collect the rest 19500 by the end of the year. Please give your support to these children for a brighter knowledge and possibility to share it with friends and family. Many thanks for your great support and we are hoping for future contributions.

SCHOOL RENOVATION IN LAOS

Several schools in Laos are in urgent need of renovations. Many schools are simply open bamboo huts with dirt floors, and during the rainy season children cannot even sit. They lack basic supplies.

SEDA has raised funds to help many elementary schools in Vientiane and three provinces in southern of Lao P.D.R. (Sekong, Attappeu, and Salavanh provinces). All of these schools still need renovation, serving over 1000 children.

To develop basic education and to meet the Millennium Development Goals, there is a strong need for a support not only from Lao government, Education For All program, but also from individuals. SEDA urges everyone to contribute through global giving, so that we could create proper learning environment for the most disadvantaged areas. Our help is operative and effective due to long term cooperation with these provinces.
