Food for Work Program – Helping victims of the typhoon
SEDA has implemented a Food for Work program in order to help victims of the typhoon in late 2009. On March 10th 2010 SEDA staff and volunteers traveled to the southern provinces and spent 6 days in the affected areas, providing rice and iodized salts to the victims. Each person received 4kg of rice and each family received 5kg of salt which helps to fight malnutrition. In return for the provisions, people were asked to dig ponds in order to breed fish to give them sustainable food sources. 730 people were involved in this Food for Work program, and 137 families directly benefited. SEDA partnered with the Provincial Department of Disasters/ Labor and Welfare, the District Mayor, the Department of Agricultural, the Attappeu Governor and village committees in order to complete the program. So far it has been a great success for our local typhoon victims to recover from living in poverty.
