SEDA Laos, is pleased to announce the award of $24,999 from the Southeast Asia Regional Environmental Hub’s Small Grants Program from the Embassy of the United States, Bangkok.

The grant has been awarded to fund the project:

Micro-credit Project: Environmental and Biodiversity Protection of Lao Ngarm District, Lao PDR

Lao Ngarm District, in Salavanh Province, southern Lao P.D.R., comprises part of an internationally important, threatened ecosystem. Under the weight of poverty and private investors, communities are powerless against increasing logging and collection of Non-Timber Forest Products.

SEDA will use the $24,999 funding to implement a program designed to protect the environment and biodiversity in the district through a combination of improved agricultural techniques, micro-credit for farmers, and the introduction of renewable energy sources.

Using the funding SEDA will:

  • Provide seedlings for long-term cultivation to farmers through SEDA’s micro-credit scheme.
  • Provide agricultural training for the cultivation of cash crops and marketing assistance to sell surplus crops at a profit.
  • Establish a 100% organic and sustainable system using SEDA’s expertise on clean technologies.

“The funding from the US Embassy will enable SEDA to build capacity in Southern Laos, and make a real impact in the protection of biodiversity in the region. It will also address issues of poverty in the area by providing opportunities for sustainable income generation.”

-   SEDA founder and Chief Executive, Souly QuachAngkham

SEDA is partnering with the University of Florida Institute, of Food and Agriculture Science and the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) to implement the program.
